未来世紀 軍艦島
The Future century GUNKAN-JIMA
未来へ――
昭和49年1月15日、軍艦島（長崎県高島町端島）で操業を続けていた端島炭鉱が閉山した。正式な名称は、『三菱石炭鉱業株式会社 高島鉱業所端島砿』という。
現在、軍艦島の東部地域には、海底奥深くから掘り出した石炭を製品炭にするために使われていた選炭施設や貯炭場、竪抗桟橋などの遺構がある。また、西部地域には、炭鉱で働いていた人たちや、その家族が暮らしていた建築物が立ち並んでいる。最初は、その記録をすることを主な目的としていたが、足しげく通っているうちに立ち現れてきたものがあった。レンズを向けていると、様々なものがその表情を見せ始めたのだ。それはあたかも、生命を吹き返してくるように感じられた。
平成26年1月29日、政府は、2015年（平成27年）の国際連合教育科学文化機関（ユネスコ）の世界文化遺産登録に向けて『明治日本の産業革命遺産 九州・山口と関連地域』を推薦した。軍艦島は、この構成資産の中に含まれている。
軍艦島に刻み込まれている“炭鉱の記憶”や、“先人たちの力”――。それらのほんの一部でも、本書を通じて、未来へと伝えてゆくことができれば、著者としてこんなにうれしいことはない。

To the future――
"Hashima Coal Mine Shaft" is located on Gunkanjima Island which means "Battleship Island"
Location:Hashima, Takashima-cho, Nagasaki, Japan.
The mine was closed down January 15th 1974 (Showa 49th). The official name was "Takashima Mining Industry Hashima Shaft, Mitsubishi Coal Mining Industry Co.Ltd."
Viewing the ruins of the coal mining complex the magnitude of production is staggering, even today it is present in scent. Mine shafts under the ocean ripping it out to produce the fuel for the daily survival/fuel, in Japan at that time. The storage site and the shaft pier in the east. The community facilities for the workers and their families in the west, are staggering to view, large apartment blocks some as high as 9 floors, the tallest in Japan at that time.
Though I had just begun to record them objectively! Soon after the appearance of something different in my viewfinder. I felt each unique expressions. Those ruins and abandoned apartment, houses, complexes were gradually coming back to life.
The Government of Japan has applied for the registration of "World Heritage" to "UNESCO" with the recommendation of "Industrial Heritage Of Kyushu, Yamaguchi", Gunkanjima is one of the assets of the program. Dating back to Meiji period Japan.
"The Memories Of The Coal Mining" and "The Power Of Our Predecessors" have existed in Gunkanjima. It's an honor for I that this book artistically created. Will document and live for a generation and younger generations to come!
